Brooks Malone Sponsors Chuckey-Doak High School Team In Johnson City Area Home Builders Association’s “Battle of the Build”

This year, Brooks Malone is proud to support and mentor the local team at Chuckey-Doak High School in the upcoming “Battle of the Build,” sponsored by Eastman Credit Union. This event, produced by the Johnson City Area Home Builders Association, will take place at their 51st Annual Home and Outdoor Show on February 21-23, 2020.

The friendly competition, amongst our community’s high schools, is described as “a grassroots workforce development outreach of the Johnson City Area Home Builders Association that seeks to build connections between local students, teachers, employers and those who have made careers in manufacturing, trades, and supporting businesses.”

Woody Kahley, a veteran of Chuckey-Doak High School for over 22 years, and the Career and Technical Education (CTE) teacher at the school, is spearheading the team and his students are excited to show off their hard work next month.

In general, CTE provides high school students with a variety of opportunities to get on the fast track in preparing for adulthood whether they choose to continue their education by attending university or by starting their career straight out of high school. CTE students learn how core subjects, like Mathematics, Science, and English, actually apply to today’s world by participating in hands-on training and gaining real world experience through internships and work shadowing.

In the same vein, the Johnson City Area Home Builders Association’s “Battle of the Build,” in its 3rd year, aims to inspire northeast Tennessee’s youth to learn about and possibly pursue a career in construction and various other trades. The event features area high schools competing against each other by planning and building a project of their choice, which is ultimately presented and judged at the show. Although the teams’ projects are constructed at their respective schools, they are further tasked to move and set them up at the Mini Dome on the campus of East Tennessee State University.

Additionally, the teams will be available on-site in order to present their work to the public and answer any potential questions about their work process. At the conclusion of the event, the students’ projects will be inspected and judged by a panel of nationally recognized builders.

During the show, each team’s project will be displayed and the public will have an opportunity to bid on the different projects by silent auction. Any proceeds generated from the silent auction will directly benefit the particular school that earns them. Plus, the projects will be judged in five different categories: presentation, build quality, finish quality, creativity, and complexity; cash prizes will be awarded to the selected teams for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. There are even two new prizes added to the program this year for “Popular Vote” and “Chairman’s Choice.”

Please join the Johnson City Area Home Builders Association and Brooks Malone in encouraging our local community’s teachers and youth by supporting their efforts in this program. Their desire to either impart or learn lifelong skills and practical experience is essential for our young adults to achieve success in whatever career they may choose.
