Library Media Center Mission Statement, Goals and Objectives

Mission Statement:

The mission of the school library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. This mission is accomplished:

  • by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats,
  • by providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas,
  • by working with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students.

The library media center will empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users and creators of information through direct instruction with students, collaboration with staff, and a media program that provides a variety of programs, services and resources.

To provide access to information in all forms.

To provide leadership and expertise in the use of informational and instructional technology.

To participate in networks that enhance access to resources located outside the school.

To promote literacy and the love of reading.

To purchase and process printed media materials.

To promote the students' enjoyment of and commitment to reading.

To help students find answers to questions, whether posed in the classroom or based on personal interests.

To expose students to materials which reflect the rich diversity of our world.

To promote awareness and used of resources available in the library, both print and electronic.

To encourage an appreciation of the valuable resources available in libraries.

All students will be supported to become skillful researchers and ethical users and creators of information through direct instruction or through information available on the library website.

All students will have access to the library media center, either through classes, or independently before and after school, during study halls, lunch periods, and with passes from teachers.

All students will demonstrate the ability to effectively use online resources; i.e., knowledge of the internet and online safety.

Students will read for recreation as well as for learning at appropriate text complexity levels.

All students will progress towards becoming an information literate citizen upon graduation.

The library media specialist will apply the most proficient professional knowledge and skill to the teaching, leading, and guidance of students.

The teaching staff will be supported collaboratively to achieve both library media and classroom instructional goals
